Fitzroy and Werribee will battle it out next weekend for promotion to C Grade for 2010 and the right to take on Rupertswood in the 2009 D1 Grand Final, after Fitzroy defeated Whitefriars by 78 points in the first semi-final.
The Seniors played on Sunday in windy and cold conditions at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley. The team came up against a Whitefriars team which had defeated us twice during the home-and-away season. Fitzroy 19-16-130 defeated Whitefriars 8-4-52 by 78 points.
The team made a strong start and maintained an aggressive approach on winning the football. Our defence operated well and we were able to cause the Whitefriars team to turn the ball over and give us opportunities to go forward. It was an impressive team display in the first half. Fitzroy went into the half time break having kicked 9.10 and kept Whitefriars to 1.1, which was their first quarter score.
The team came out and played well in the third quarter keeping Whitefriars to limited forward opportunities, but Whitefriars were taking these opportunities and began to put some scoreboard pressure on us. Matthew Biggs chipped in with a timely goal late in the third quarter and steady the team. It was a tight quarter, but Fitzroy won this one as well.
Ross Borland had a day out, in what could be call difficult conditions with the wind gusting throughout the day - he finished with 8 goals. The team fought hard for the goals with Milos Zika kicking 3, Andrew Seddon and Oliver Stolz with 2 and 1 goal to each of Matthew Biggs, Conor Dullard. Matthew Mackay, James Taylor.
The best for Fitzroy were Ross Borland, Simon Kelleher, Conor Dullard, Chris Meighen, Milos Zika and Jack Parkinson.
It was a proud day for all Fitzroy supporters who witnessed a united team performance. The Preliminary Final will be played this Saturday against Werribee, who Fitzroy defeated in Round 14 by 5 goals at Werribee.
All supporters are encouraged to get along to St. Bernard's College (Gate 8 Hampton Rd. West Essendon, Melway map 27 J3) for the 2pm game as the boys aim for a grand final place and elevation to C Section for 2010.
In contrast the U/19's season unfortunately ended on Saturday when the U/19 (1) team went down to Old Carey by 17 points.

The Reserves took on third placed Rupertswood at Brunswick Street Oval for a place in the top four. Unfortunately Rupertswood took the points for the day with the final scores being Fitzroy 6 – 7 – 43 lost to Rupertswood 9 – 10 – 64.
The boys played their hearts out, taking the lead briefly in the last quarter only to be pipped at the post by a better team. Ron Trigg played one of his best games of the season finishing with a best on ground award. He was joined by Tim Campbell who played a really good game and Brett Pollard, Jason Wilkins, David Lee and Josh Murray.
In the last game of the season the goal kickers were 2 to Alex Knorr and one each to Adrian Enright, Jason Wilkins, Tom Parkinson and Ron Trigg.
The Reserves were shattered by the result but we look forward to seeing them bettering the result in 2010. Thank you to all of the off-field volunteers and support staff who have helped the Reserves during the season.
The Seniors took on top of the ladder Rupertswood at Brunswick Street Oval, and unfortunately weren’t able to capitalise on the recent winning streak finishing 9 – 9 – 63 to Rupertswood 16 – 8 – 104.
It was however a solid game to prepare for the first final this Sunday. The players will take a lot of confidence knowing that they can match it with a very good team like Rupertswood.
Two new players were brought into the team, Tristan Maddocks who has been playing with the Reserves and Antony Harbor who has been playing with the Under 19(1). These two players have been frustrated through the season with injury and they have been outstanding in doing the right things so they could play some football this season. Both played like they are very comfortable playing a high level of football.
Although the scoreboard result was not flattering, the ability of our team to apply pressure on the opposition and keep pushing the football forwards was a positive sign. It was also another match where the goal kicking was shared amongst the team. Ross Borland and Travis Conn lead the way with 2 each and were supported by Pat O’Connor, Oliver Stoltz, Chris Polidoras, Antony Harbor and Thomas Dlabik who all kicked one each.
Best for the day were Chris Meighen, Mathew Mackay, Jack Parkinson, Pat O’Connor, Milos Zika and John Clark.
The Seniors have finished fourth and will take on Whitefriars in the first semi final being played Sunday 30 August at Central Reserve. We ask all supporters to get along an barrack for the boys and help them along in their finals campaign.

Round 17 - Fitzroy warm up for finals with impressive wins

The Seniors entered the Prahran game needing to win to assure their place in the finals. The game was also important for the Seniors to find improvement in their game. In the end Fitzroy came away with the important 4 points socring 17 - 17 – 119 to comfortably defeat Prahran 4 – 9 – 33.
The Fitzroy players were excellent in the first half in all areas of the game. The defence was quick to intercept Prahran’s attacking moves and there was good pressure applied through the midfield.
It was encouraging to see the inclusions of Ben Atherton and Andrew Seddon into the team and they both played very well. Other encouraging signs from the game were the form of Mathew MacKay, Jimmy O'Rielly, Harry Topp and Pat O’Connor.
The goal kicking was shared amongst the team with 3 to Ross Borland who was supported with 2 to Chris Polidoras and James O’Rielly, and 1 each to Pat O’Connor, Oliver Stoltz, Milos Zika, Vinnie Cahill, Dan Clark, Travis Conn, Isaac Hughson, Mathew MacKay, Andrew Seddon and Oliver Stoltz.
Best for the day were Simon Kelleher, Mathew MacKay, Harry Topp, Oliver Stoltz, Pat O’Connor and Andrew Seddon.
The lead up into the finals will be interesting in this week's final home and away round as the top four teams play each other, however, it is unlikely any of the positions will change for the first finals week. However with a better precentage than Whitefriars should Fitzroy defeat top of the ladder Rupertswood and second placed Werribee defeat Whitefriars, then Fitzroy will snatch third spot - a most unlikely scenario three weeks ago.
The Reserves took on bottom of the ladder Prahran in very windy conditions and won convincingly by twenty four goals - Fitzroy 22 – 20 – 152 defeated Prahran 1 – 2 – 8.
The team played a much smarter and more disciplined brand of football and gave the forwards great delivery all day. The goals were shared around with Jess Kennedy-Buckley and Alex Knorr leading the way with 4 each. They were supported by James Pitts and Simon Dundas kicking 3 each, 2 Jack Beech, Shane Donoghue, Jason Wilkins and 1 to Adrian Enright and Ben O’Brien.
Best on the day were Simon Dundas, Nick Johnson and Jack Beech. They were joined by Brett Pollard Tristan Maddocks and Alex Knorr.
This weekend is the last game of the home and away season and will be at Brunswick Street Oval. The Reserves are now looking at the do or die game against Rupertswood who are in third place. A win to Werribee on Saturday has resulted in Werribee (4th), Fitzroy (5th) and Old Mentonians (6th) all being on the same points with percentage separating. The Club has some quite hard games this weekend. Werribee travel to play 2nd place Whitefriars and Old Mentonians will be hosting 1st place NOBS. The Club encourages all Fitzroy supporters to get along to cheer on the Reserves, their game starts at 11.40.
Go Roys!

Fitzroy's win over South Melbourne ensured the club will participate in the D1 season final series moving two games ahead of nearest challengers Old Mentonians and North Old Boyus with two rounds of the home and away season to play. It was a great day for the Roys with Kevin Murray and Bill Stephen coming into the rooms to address the players before they took the field. Both talked about the love of the jumper and how they were happy to see the jumper on Brunswick Street Oval again and that the boys were keeping the tradition going. Fitzroy 18 - 17 – 125 defeated South Melbourne 9 - 9 - 63
Ryan Atkinson started the day in the Reserves, playing one quarter to then be a late call up for the Seniors, resulting in him playing his first Senior game for the club. The late call up was after impressive performances in the Reserves and he made a solid contribution to the team playing on the wing.
South Melbourne really took the game up to Fitzroy, applying good pressure all over the ground, and their kicking to find free team-mates was causing the Roys trouble. Fitzroy made some good plays and got on top of South Melbourne for most of the game with some good effective football.
Ross Borland again lead the goal kicking finishing the day with 7 and he was supported by Oliver Stoltz with 3, 2 to Conor Dullard, Pat O’Connor and Chris Polidoras and 1 to Matthew Biggs and Milos Zika.
Best for the day were Conor Dullard, Ross Borland, Simon Kelleher, Milos Zika, Matthew Biggs and Austin Ley.
It was a very satisfying day to see our players win the Bedford-Stephen cup, in front of a big crowd at Brunswick Street, and to walk into the old grandstand and celebrate the win with past players of Fitzroy.
The win has Fitzroy in 4th place, two games a head of 5th place and two wins below 3rd. This week they will be travelling to Prahran who are in 7th place. The last game of the home and away season will be at Brunswick Street Oval so we encourage supporters to get behind the Royboys who will be playing top of the ladder Rupertswood.
The Reserves were severely tested by their lower ranked opponent on Saturday with the lead changing a couple of times in the last quarter. Fitzroy greats Kevin Murray and Bill Stephen addressed the players at half time. Fitzroy 13 - 6 – 84 defeated South Melbourne 11 – 9 – 75.
In a game that never really reached any great heights, the Reserves got out of jail in the last quarter with two great goals from Jess Kennedy-Buckley. The other goal kickers for the day were 2 to Travis Conn, Damian Hannam, Jess Kennedy-Buckley and Brett Pollard, 1 to Paul Diacogiorgis, Ryan Atkinson, Fraser Cameron, James Pitts and Nick Johnston.
Best players were Jack Beech and Tim Campbell who controlled the half-back line brilliantly. They were joined by Brett Pollard, Tristan Maddocks, Diarmuid Griffin and James Pitts.
The win keeps the season alive, with two wins needed from the final two games. The Reserves are sitting in 6th place behind Werribee who have the same points but a much healthier percentage. We’re a game out of the top 4 with Old Mentonians holding that position. Werribee and Old Mentonians face off this weekend, while we travel to Prahran. Our last game, which is also the last game at home, is against Rupertswood who are currently in second place. Werribee and Old Mentonians don’t have easy games in the last round either, they play Whitefriars currently 3rd and NOBS currently 1st respectively.

Round 15 - Fitzroy moves step closer to finals spot

def | ![]() |
Fitzroy took on NOBS who have been the form team in the latter part of this season and they were breathing down Fitzroy's neck to overtake their position for the fourth spot on the ladder. NOBS had also beaten Fitzroy in previous encounters. The comfortable win by Fitzroy has helped the Seniors secure fourth place and a game clear of fifth place. Fitzroy 24 - 18 – 163 defeated NOBS 10 - 8 – 69.
The scattered showers that were experienced during the Reserves match had cleared and the team played a good first half with the game stats indicating strong performances in many areas, although only slightly ahead at half time. After half time the players put together the best quarter of football of the season. The players really teamed up well and were determined to support each other. It was a brilliant team performance, where every player made a big contribution.
The boys enjoyed celebrating the Fitzroy Club song under the old grandstand after the game.
The game was also a milestone 100th game at Fitzroy for Milos Zika, who played an outstanding game through the midfield and the forward line, kicking one goal and named amongst the best on ground. The other goal kickers were Ross Borland with an amazing 7, Conor Dullard with 4, 3 to Oliver Stoltz, 2 to both James Taylor, Shane Donoghue and one each to Isaac Hughson, Matthew Biggs, Vinnie Cahill, Pat O’Connor, Chris Polidoras and Milos Zika.
The best for the day were Matthew Biggs, Milos Zika, Chris Polidoras, Conor Dullard, John Clark and Ross Borland.
The team is still focused on improving in different areas, but the team is progressing well. Whilst Fitzroy is sitting a game clear of fifth place, the next three games are still important wins heading into a possible finals campaign.
The Reserves missed a good opportunity to move back into the top four with their loss to NOBS – a win to Old Mentonians has put them back into the top four and Fitzroy now sits in sixth place behind Werribee who are on the same points, but have a stronger percentage.
In windy and at times wet conditions, Fitzroy didn’t capitalise on the home ground advantage kicking 8-18 to NOBS 10-8. Travis Conn, back after two weeks injured, topped the goal kickers finishing with two. Paul Diacogiorgis, Damian Hannam, Tom Parkinson, Alex Knorr and Craig Moore all finished with one goal each.
The best on ground were Diarmuid Griffin, Alex Knorr, Ryan Atkinson, Adrian Enright, Richard Willingham and Travis Conn.
To ensure they make the finals, the Reserves need to win all of the last three games, so get along to the games and help support the boys in their quest to play finals this year.

Round 14 - Fitzroy defeats Werribee to maintain grip on fourth spot

def | ![]() |
Fitzroy took on second placed Werribee in windy conditions at Soldiers Reserve and finished the day with not only a convincing 5 goal win 15-11-101 to Werribee 9-17-71, but moving back into fourth place.
Fitzroy began the first quarter well with good pressure and capitalising on the forward play into the wind. In the second quarter they maintained the pressure on Werribee and advanced further on the scoreboard.
Werribee came out after half time with a stronger commitment and they were able to reduce the scoreboard difference to within 10 points at 3/4 time. The Fitzroy players held on in the last quarter.
There was a good contribution from all players, with the forwards fantastic at sharing the ball and applying pressure on Werribee's counter attacks. There were nine goal kickers with Conor Dullard leading the way with 4, Chris Polidoras 3, Ross Borland 2 and 1 to each of Sam Baker, Matthew Biggs, Chris Meighen, Oliver Stoltz, Jimmy Taylor and Milos Zika.
The midfield won the majority of stoppages and moved the ball quickly into our forward line, our backline reduced the Werribee forwards to take only 4 inside 50m marks and used the ball well out of defence.
The best for the day were Sam Baker, Conor Dullard, Chris Polidoras, Jack Parkinson, Austin Ley and Anthony Daff.
This week Fitzroy hosts sixth placed NOBS who are only a win behind Fitzroy.
In the reserves Fitzroy played Werribee who were in sixth place on the D1 Reserves ladder before the game. Unfortunately Werribee won not only the game but also took fourth place – Werribee 11-5-71 to Fitzroy 4-11-35.
The team fought hard, but at times made poor decisions when under pressure. Opportunities weren’t taken advantage of when in front of goal finishing the day with only four goals and eleven behinds. There were four goal kickers: Damian Hannam, Jess Kennedy-Buckley, John Richardson and Jason Wilkins.
The best players were Brett Pollard, Ron Trigg, Simon Dundas, Adrian Enright, Rowan Enright and Diarmuid Griffin.
This week’s loss has meant that there is a three-way fight for the prized fourth place – Werribee, Fitzroy and Old Mentonians are all 8-6 with 26.43% separating fourth and sixth places. The Reserves take on second placed NOBS this weekend, whilst Werribee take on top of the ladder Rupertswood. We possibly need to win our remaining four games to make the finals. Certainly a win this weekend is vital to keeping our changes alive

def | ![]() |
An inaccurate Fitzroy continued its epic battle with Old Mentonians for the final place in D1's Top Four for another week when it defeated Emmaus St Leos by 17 points. It was a good day for the Reserves and Seniors, even though there was a stage in the Seniors when it looked like they were going to lose the game - they were 5 points down part way through the third quarter.
Earlier in the day Fitzroy Reserves took on Emmaus St Leos in ordinary conditions. The ground was patchy and the wind was gusty and strong. Tom McBurney returned to the side to play his 100th game for the club. Tom was a member of the 2005 premiership side and lead the team out onto the ground through a banner. Tom finished his 100th game with a goal and contributed to the win Fitzroy 17 - 5 - 107 to Emmaus St Leos 4 - 10 - 34. The Club congratulates Tom on this great achievement.
The average conditions lead to an average game despite capitalising on the wind in the last quarter and kicking 12 goals. Damian Hannam kicked 4, Justin Nagorcka, James Pitts and Jason Wilkins all kicked 2 goals each and singles to Shane Donoghue, Tom McBurney, Tom Parkinson, Brett Pollard, John Richardson, Matthew Siely and Paul Diacogiorgis in his first game back.
Brett Pollard was best on ground and was amply supported by James Pitts who unfortunately injured his ankle near the end of the game. Other bests were Justin Nagorcka, Tim Campbell who was playing his first Reserves game, Cameron Fraser and Ron Trigg.
The win has helped the Reserves percentage and helps hold them in fourth place. This week the team travels to Werribee who are in 6th - only a win behind Fitzroy - another must win game.

D1 - Round 12 - Dismal day for the Roys
![]() |
lost to | ![]() |
In a dismal day for the club, where all five teams lost, Fitzroy's senior final hopes took a battering when the seniors went down by 28 points to Whitefriars. Falling to fifth on the ladder, the seniors are a game outside the Four, although do have a superior percentage to fourth placed Old Mentonians.
The battle for the top three spots seems pretty well settled after Whitefriars won against us last Saturday at the Brunswick Street ground. The Royboys gave their all and took the fight right up to the Friars, but went down by the proverbial 4 and a half goals as predicted by VAFA scribe Di Langton in her preview. But for inaccurate kicking the Roys could have pinched it, but as they say, bad kicking is bad football.
The boys however were gallant in defeat against a bigger and more skilled side. Veteran Ben Atherton coming off a BOG in his 100th game last week again fired up ably supported by his old mate Vinnie Cahil and Captain Jimmy O’Reilly. Anthony Daff, Chris Polidaris, Connor Dullard again put in great games with young Rory Angiolella having a spell from the Under 19s to play a great game for the seniors.

Round 11 - Fitzroy move back into the Top Four with win over Aquinas
![]() |
def. | ![]() |
Ben Atherton celebrated his 100th game for the Reds and Roys in style as Fitzroy's senior team climbed back into the Top Four of D1 section with a 26 point win over Aquinas. .
The rain threatened during the day and there was a brief moment in the second half where it rained briefly, but it had no impact on the game. Fitzroy Seniors had fallen out of the top four last week which meant that this week’s game was important to be able to get back into the top four. Fitzroy overcame a very disciplined Aquinas team and had a satisfying win.
This win was special because of Ben Atherton's 100th game. Ben had a great game and finished with the best on ground and played like the club wants him too for another 100 games. He was well supported with good performances by Chris Poladoris, Jack Parkinson, Travis Conn, Anthony Daff and Vinnie Cahill.
The goals were shared with Conor Dullard kicking 3 goals, Chris Polidoras, Ross Borland, Harry Topp and Travis Conn all kicked 2 goals each. Simon Kelleher, Isaac Hughson and Milos Zika finished the day with one goal each.
This week’s game against Whitefriars at Brunswick Street Oval is an important one. Whitefriars are in third place with an 8-3 record. Last time these two teams met, Whitefriars won the game by 33 points.
After last week’s game which saw the Fitzroy Reserves fall out of the top 4, they sounded a warning to their rival teams that they are not a spent force in 2009, with a clinical display against an under strength Aquinas. Fitzroy won 22-17-149 to Aquinas 1-0-6. The win also moved them back into the top 4, a game clear of fifth place.
The Reserves dominated all day, and displayed a ruthless and team orientated attitude, winning by around 24 goals.
Best players were Jason Wilkins, Matt DeGiusti and Adrian Enright, while up forward Damian Hannam kicked five goals, with Jack Beech in his first game back after 3 weeks out through injury, booting four. The balance of the goals were shared amongst ten players with Justin Nagorka, Jason Wilkins and Daniel Ryan all kicking two each and Simon Dundas, Sane Donoghue, Matthew DeGuisti, Ronald Trigg, John Richardson, Angus Mulholland and Tom Parkinson all kicking one each.
The reserves now look forward to their season defining game against the third placed Whitefriars at Brunswick Street Oval this weekend.

Round 10 - Saturday 27th June
Fitzroy loses to Old Mentonians
![]() |
lost to | ![]() |
On Saturday in good conditions but on a very damp and muddy ground the Reserves blew a great chance to cement a top four spot, losing to Old Mentonians by 27 points – Old Mentonians 15-10-100 defeated Fitzroy 11-7-73.
Fitzroy was down by 16 points at the first quarter break and fought hard in the second quarter to level the scores. Despite going into half time with the scores level, Fitzroy were unable to maintain their intensity in the second half, in one of their more disappointing halves of the season.
Better players on the day were Travis Conn, who threw himself around all day and made his presence felt and Ryan Atkinson, who time and time again belied his small frame and attacked the ball without fear for his own personal well-being. Other notable mentions go to Shane Donohue, Brett Pollard, Jack Buncle and James Pitts.
The goal kicking was shared amongst eight players with Travis Conn, Ryan Atkinson and Damian Hamman finishing with 2 goals each, and James Pitts, Matthew Siely, Tom Parkinson, Angus Mulholland and Christian Jenkins, playing his first game for Fitzroy, all finishing with one goal each.
This loss sees the team fall out of the top four to fifth with percentage separating them from Old Mentonians who have taken fourth place. The Ressies can simply not afford to lose their next two at home and will be looking to bounce back with a good win against Aquinas this coming weekend.
The conditions stayed sunny for the Seniors game in what was going to be a tough match between the fourth and fifth placed teams. Unfortunately, they also went down to Old Mentonians by a heart breaking seven points – Old Mentonians 14-13-97 defeated Fitzroy 14-5-89.
It was a bitter-sweet day for the Seniors. It was a consistent performance across the four quarters, but we just couldn't raise our performance level high enough at some key moments of the game. The players took the game up to Old Mentone and we always looked like we could break away and put some real scoreboard pressure on them, but we just failed to execute some key plays and they took advantage of their opportunities in the final quarter.
We have made improvements to our game over the last two weeks. We have seen players raise their level of play, such as Ross Borland, Jack Parkinson, Sam Baker, Harry Topp and Austin Ley. Ross Borland was again named best on ground and finished with seven goals. Other bests for Fitzroy were Matthew Mackay, Vincent Cahill, Zika Milos, Austin Ley and Dan Clark.
In addition to Ross Borland’s great performance in front of goal, Matthew Mackay finished with two goals and John Clark, Conor Dullard, Simon Kelleher, Patrick O’Connor and Milos Zika all finished with one goal each.
Our team now has limited opportunities left to consolidate a place in the top four. This loss sees the team fall to sixth place with only 0.8% separating it from fifth, but a game out of the top four. This coming weekend we play Aquinas at home and aim for a win.
Round 9 - Saturday 20th June
Fitzroy defeated South Melbourne Districts

def. | ![]() |
Fitzroy claimed the Bedford-Stephen Cup with a resounding 68 point win at the Lindsay Hassett Oval on Saturday afternoon. In claiming the Cup they also kept their finals hopes alive by reclaiming fourth position on the D1 ladder.
Fitzroy Seniors took on South Melbourne Districts on a windy Saturday at Albert Park. After a strong team performance, Fitzroy brought home the Bedford-Stephen Cup winning 18-13-121 to South Melbourne Districts 8-5-53.
Isaac Hughson was on song finishing the day with 5 goals, along with Oliver Stolz with 4 goals. They were well supported in the forward line by Ross Borland who finished with 1 goal and the best on ground. Other goals kickers were John Clark and Connor Dullard both kicking 2 goals and singles to Vinnie Cahill, Anthony Daff, Jimmy O’Rielly and Milos Zika.
With the best all-round performance of the season and all players made a strong contribution across four quarters it was hard to pick the Fitzroy best players. Ross Borland was joined by Sam Baker, Milos Zika, Andrew Seddon, Thomas Dlabik and Dan Clark.
This win brought Fitzroy back in the top 4 with a healthy percentage. It also makes for a showdown this coming weekend when Fitzroy take on the fifth placed Old Mentonians.
The Fitzroy Reserves team also had a convincing win over South Melbourne Districts finishing 12-15-87 to South Melbourne Districts 5-5-35.
Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, Fitzroy lead 4-6 to 1-2. They didn’t look back for the rest of the game winning each of the quarters. Travis Conn lead Fitzroy’s goal kicking finishing the day with 4 goals, Matthew Siely with 2 and singles to Jack Buncle, Adrian Enright, David Lee, James Pitts and Matthew DeGiusti in his first Reserves game.
It was a great team effort and Fitzroy’s best were judged to be Austin Ley, Shane Donoghue, Ben O’Brien, Travis Conn, Matthew Siely and Chris Wills.
This win puts Fitzroy a game clear in fourth place and will be taking on fifth placed Old Mentonians making for a great game this weekend in Keysborough.
Round 8 - Saturday 13th June
Fitzroy drop out of the Four

lost to. | ![]() |
The Senior team was sitting in fourth place facing the second place Werribee. On a cool winter day, the Senior team weren’t able to defeat Werribee going down by 30 points. The team worked hard around the ground but were unfortunately outplayed by a stronger, more organised and more skilful opposition.
Ross Borland yet again presented strongly up forward finishing the day with four goals and taking out the best on ground award. He was supported in the goal kicking by Jack Beech, Chris Polidoras, Anthony Daff, Conor Dullard, Isaac Hughson and James Taylor who all kicked a goal each.
At the other end of the ground in defence, playing his first game since round three, Captain James O’Rielly had a strong influence on the game. He was supported by Jack Parkinson who was competitive in the full back position.
In a day that wasn’t great for the Roys, there was a highlight in the last quarter - Simon Kelleher took a ripping mark! The players selected best for the day, in addition to Ross Borland, was Martin Cusack, down back Jack Parkinson and James O'Rielly and they were supported well by Conor Dullard and Sam Baker.
The day ended Fitzroy 10 – 12- 72 defeated by Werribee 15 – 12 – 102.
Fitzroy Reserves, who were sitting in sixth place, took on the third placed Werribee in a match which saw a good all round team performance and Fitzroy winning by 33 points!
Looking at getting back into the top 8, the team displayed great run and carry, and they attacked the footy and the contest all day. This was probably their most consistent team performance for the year.
Justin Nagorka was on fire in the forward line finishing the day with four goals. He was assisted by Ben O’Brien who was very polished up forward and finished the day with one goal. Other goal kickers were Damian Hannam with 2, Jason Wilkins 2 and Milos Zika, Travis Conn, Ronald Trigg and Simon Dundas all kicking one goal each.
Late inclusion, Tom Dlabik was very solid and Aussie (Austin) Ley was great off half back. Aussie was deemed the best on ground for his performance and he was joined by Tom Dlabik, Jason Wilkins, Justin Nagorka, Milos Zika and Ben O’Brien.
They are looking forward to backing it up again South Melbourne this weekend. Fitzroy finished the day 13–16–94 defeating Werribee 9-7-61.

Fitzroy fall to fourth
![]() |
vs. | ![]() |
The Fitzroy Seniors have lost their away match for the second week in a row, weakening their hold on a Top Four place. The 24 point loss to North Old Boys sees the Roys fall to fourth place on the D1 ladder and level on points with fifth placed Whitefriars. Only Fitzroy's superior percentage of 111% to Whitefriars 98% stopped the Roys from tumbling out of the four.
In the seniors, NOBS got off to a quick start kicking with the wind and at Quarter time were 4.3.27 to the Roys 1.2.6. Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the Royboys put on 6.6 to 1 goal in a great display of fast power football. Connor Dullard and Jack Beech kicked 2 goals each to wrest back the advantage over the NOBS flying start in the first quarter. At the interval Fitzroy hald a 17 point lead, 7.8.50 to 5.3.33. Half way through the third quarter Fitzroy held NOBS scoreless until the flood gates opened when the NOBS piled on 7 goals to go to a three quarter break of 12.7.79 to to a three quarter break of 12.7.79 to 7.10.52.
The loss of Ben Atherton and Matthew McKay in a terrible clash of the heads in the third quarter (check out the photo of Matt. McKay on the Photos link above)was damaging. Atherton was patched up and able to resume but McKay was not seen again. The Roys tried hard to get back into it but couldn't regain their second quarter momentum kicking 3.4 to NOBS 3.1 in the last quarter.
Next week's home match against second placed Werribee will be a tough task, but it's a match the Roys must win if they are to keep their 2009 season on track.

Three in a row for the Roys!
![]() |
vs. | ![]() |
Fitzroy has consolidated their place in the Final Four with a convincing 41 point victory over Emmaus St. Leos. Their third win in a row moves them ahead one game and a hefty 15 percent ahead of fourth placed Old Mentonians and two games ahead of next week's opponents Whitefriars. Vincent Cahill, a livewire in the forward line led the way for the Roys being named as best on ground for the day. He was ably supported by acting captain Mathew Mckay, forwards Anthony Daff and John Clark, centre half back Dan Clark and Marty Cusack.
The reserves have also kicked two games clear of the teams outside the Four with their fourth win of the season and sit fourth on the Reserves Ladder. With next week's opponent Whitefriars currently on top of the ladder on percentage, the reserves have a great chance to make a statement in terms of their season by winning next week. Goals were evenly spread this week with forwards Hannam, Wilkins and Atkinson kicking two each and six others also kicking one major each.

![]() |
vs. | ![]() |
After last week's excellent win against Prahran, the Round 2 match against Rupertswood at Salesian College, Sunbury was a dose of reality for the Royboys, as both the senior and reserves lost convincingly to Rupertswood (who were demoted from C Section at the end of last season).
Fitzroy's senior team 2.4, 3.5, 3.8, 3.8.26 were well beaten by Rupertswood 2.3, 9.12, 12.12, 13.15.93 by 67 points. Better players for the Roys were Matt McKay, Sam Baker, Simon Kelleher, Oliver Stolz, Chris Sullivan and Fitzroy captain Jim O'Reilly who battled manfully all day at centre half-back. Fraser Cameron, Oliver Stolz and Chris Polidoras were the goalkickers. Rupertswood set up the win when they kicked 7.9 in the second quarter aided by a strong breeze. However it was Rupertswood's better disposal skills that was the true difference between the teams.
In the reserves Fitzroy 10.6.66 lost to Rupertswood 17.3.105 by 39 points. Damian Hannam led the way with 6 goals, while Austin Ley, Justin Najorka, Daire O'Haodhagain and Matthew Sielby kicked singles. Jack Parkinson was the best for Fitzroy, while Diarmuid Griffin, Austin Ley, Milos Sika, Daire O'Haodhagain and Damian Hannam were also amongst the best.
Earlier at 11.30 am, Fitzroy Secretary Bill Atherton, with the Under 19 Team in attendance, laid a wreath at the Fitzroy Anzac Memorial in memory of the Fitzroy players, officials and members who lost their lives serving our country in the Great Wars over the last century. Round 1 - Fitzroy Football Club joins the VAFA
Fitzroy beats Prahran
Fitzroy Seniors Match Report Saturday 18th April 2009
We played some 'patchy' football in Round 1, but it was a satisfying win for our Senior team, and much more satisfying in front of the big Fitzroy crowd. After we had the old legendary lion, Kevin Murray, present our first-game players with their jumpers, the team got off to a great start in the first quarter as the players were strongly committed to team and attacking the ball and we outplayed the opposition with smart handball and effective kicking going into attack. Through this strong team commitment we lost Andre Bonnice and Thomas Dlabik who suffered injuries from two separate collisions. Both players epitomised bravery with their attack on the football. I'm certain we wont be able to hold them back from playing in round 3. The second quarter saw Prahran more competitive and outplayed us at the contested ball. Our good start was quickly overshadowed. We entered the half-time break with a real contest on our hands. Great credit to our players by responding well after half time to improve our tackling and increase in pressure put on the opposition. Finally, the persistance of our players wore down the Prahran team and we went out comfortable winners on the scoreboard, however, this didn't reflect the closeness of the contest. It was a real team performance, and it was nice to see our first gamers perform well: Isaac Hughson (grandson of Fred Hughson) kicking 7 goals as a midfielder-forward; Michael Shaunessy providing a good avenue for us to make our attacks from defence through; Pat O'Conner kicking an important last quarter goal; Thomas Dlabik selflessly committing to the team and looking lively up forward; and Conor Dullard with a solid all-round performance in the midfield and organising play around the stoppages. There are many areas our team must work hard towards improving if we are to help our chances of competing well against a good opposition in Rupertswood this Saturday. But the coaches have a dedicated and responsive group of players committed to making improvements to our game.

Fitzroy Reserves Match Report Saturday 18th April 2009
The Fitzroy reserves also started off the season with a hard fought seven goal win against Prahran. Leading by eight goals at the main break, it was a little disappointing not to run away with a bigger victory, with a combination of tired bodies and lazy football allowing Prahran to outscore the Roy Boys in the second half.
For Fitzroy, a rejuvenated and committed Milos Zika was clearly best on ground, burning up the grandstand wing the way he did when he won the Reds' senior best and fairest in 2005. Coming up from the under 19's, Chris Wills was terrific off the half back flank, with first gamers Tristan Maddocks, Sam Maguire and Jamie Hughes also showing they will be valuable additions to the club.
