Elaine Findlay retires after 25 years of service to Fitzroy

2.30 pm Monday 6th December 2010

Joan Eddy and Elaine FindlayLong standing Fitzroy director Elaine Findlay (pictured right with President Joan Eddy at the recent Fitzroy AGM), the first woman to serve on an AFL club board and the first to serve as a vice-chairperson of an AFL club has retired from the Fitzroy board after 25 years continuous service. Elaine served on the board with two Fitzroy chairmen Keith Weigard and Leon Wiegard and was subsequently vice-chairperson to three, Dyson Hore-Lacy, Craig Little and Joan Eddy. Elaine's term as director ended on Sunday 28th November at Fitzroy's 126th Annual General Meeting.

Starting as treasurer of Fitzroy's coterie group the Lion Hunters in the early 80's, Elaine's financial acumen soon ensured that the coterie group was making annual contributions to the club of over $100,000 a year, a sum which was sorely needed by the club at the time. Asked to join the board in 1985, Fitzroy made the preliminary final in 1986. After the AFL merger with the Brisbane Bears, Elaine continued her service to the club she has 'loved to death', remaining on the board of directors after Fitzroy and the Fitzroy Reds merged in December 2008.

Former Fitzroy Chairman and fellow life member Dyson Hore-Lacy also attended the AGM on Sunday and made the presentation of the Chandler Trophy to Elaine for her meritorious contribution to the Club over 30 yrs and gave an insight into the many facets of Elaine's great contribution to the Club.

The Chandler Trophy was named after the long serving President of Fitzroy from 1911 to 1930, Daniel J.Chandler. Elaine is certainly a very worthy receipient.

At the Annual General Meeting Joan Eddy and Tom Sargant were re-elected. Newly appointed Directors were Mrs Anita Roper, Mr Steve Earl and Mr Grant Hammond. We congratulate them on their appointment to the Board and look forward to their contribution to the management of this great Club.
