Tribute to Past Player Luncheon a great success.
7.30 pm Sunday 5th June 2011
Kevin Murray was the Club's guest of honour at today's 'Tribute to our Past Players Luncheon', The Brunswick Street Oval Community Rooms were packed with just under one hundred people who had come along to hear not only Kevin speak, but also to listen to and meet a number of our great Club's former players, such as Paul Broderick (pictured left playing for Fitzroy in 1992) .
Kevin paid tribute to his fellow Past Players that were present and said how great it was to be back at the Fitzroy Football Club where he started his football career age 16 in 1955.
Kevin paid tribute to Ivan Smith (4 senior games for Fitzroy 1956), Colin 'Stretch' McNeil (8 games 1959-60), Roy Ferguson, Colin Hobbs (64 games 1966-71), Ian McBain and Paul Broderick (93 games 1988-93) and to his old mates Billy Serong, Meggsy Sherlock, Danny Wilson and Bob Merrick (6 games, 1940, 1944), amongst many other old mates present.
Kevin played 425 senior games at AFL level; 333 for Fitzroy, 44 for East Perth, 24 for the Big V and 6 for WA and 18 night VFL games. Asked who were the best players that he played against Kevin had no doubts that it was Bobby Skilton and Teddy Whitten but Darrel Baldock would give him a sleepless Friday night before the big game!
Kevin also addressed the 2011 Fitzroy team before they went out to take the field against the Monash Blues. During his address he paid tribute to one of the toughest footballers of his era, No.17 Norm Johnstone and reminded the boys to go in hard for the ball and protect your mates. That's the way he was taught how to play the game.
The Fitzroy Football Club thanks all our past players who were in attendance, for taking the time to join us on Saturday.
