Palman Qui Meruit Ferat

Let Him Who Deserves the Palm of Victory Bear It

The motto "Palman qui meruit ferat" was Lord Nelson's motto and while it has been translated in slightly different ways (such as above) also means "Let him, who has earned it, bear the palm". It is also the motto of the Royal Naval College and the city of Nelson in New Zealand.

The motto refers to the ancient tradition of giving the victor a palm leaf to signify his victory. It was certainly an apt motto for Fitzroy who had won seven VFL premierships by 1922, more than any other club in the league.

Club Song

(to the tune of "La Marseilles")

We are the boys from old Fitzroy
We wear the colours maroon and blue,
We will always fight for victory,
We will always see it through,
Win or lose we do or die,
In defeat we'll always try,
Fitzroy, Fitzroy,
The Club we hold so dear,
Premiers we'll be this year.

Fitzroy's Original Theme Song

(to the tune of "Far Better Off In A Home")

We all stick to the Blue and Maroon,
Win or lose, Fitzroy don't change their tune;
That's the team we hold so dear,
We'll be Premiers this year;
And you'll see us with the Pennant very soon.
