Black Saturday victim Kevin Murray has put hundreds of Fitzroy diehards at ease with his declaration that his 1969 Brownlow Medal wasn't among the embers or the melted scaffolding at his retreat in at Flowerdale. "When I'm working it's always in my pocket", the 333 game legend said. "Otherwise it's around my neck." Murray has been amazed at the number of supporters from his old club concerned about his welfare and his beloved "Charlie". Murray (left) said he had planned to be at his house of 23 years on Old Goats Road near the Wild Parrot Creek, on that day but for the drought, the heat, the risk of fire and because his partner Grace, was in hospital. "There is nothing left - not a stick of furniture but I'm pleased there was none of my Fitzroy gear there" he said. Murray still has a cluttered community hall at Arcadia he visits which - for the first time because of the fire threat - is linked by phone. "I've let me two carrier pigeons go and have now got a mobile," he said. |
