MIXED VIEWS ON STRIP

The Fitzroy Football Club, which still exists despite its banishment from the AFL in 1996, has mixed views on the Brisbane Lions’ new Victorian-game jumper.

“Look, it’s not bad and should play a role in keeping the Fitzroy supporters of the Brisbane Lions pretty happy,” Fitzroy secretary Bill Atherton said.

“But  I am disappointed that our famous FFC monogram, which was originally designed back in the 1880’s, and was on the Fitzroy jumper from 1939 to 1996, has been replaced by the Lion.”

“However, if this jumper is going to be a permanent strip for the Melbourne games, fair enough.”

“At least the royal blue and red colours of the modern Fitzroy are back and make a welcome change from the dreary dark colours of most other AFL clubs.”

The Brisbane Lions yesterday unveiled the guernsey they will wear in four Victorian games this year, beginning tomorrow against Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Lions chief executive Michael Bowers was confident the jumper would be well received by the club’s Melbourne-based supporters.

“We think it looks fantastic,” Bowers said.

“It is a recognition of who we are and where we are looking forward, but with a nice acknowledgement of the past.”

The guernsey will be worn in Round 8, against Carlton at Telstra Dome, against Essendon in round 15 and against Richmond in Round 17, both at the Dome.
