New Roys Give Bert a Kick, Herald Sun Confidential, 18/4/2009 |
"Television legend Bert Newton had a blast from the past when he visited Brunswick Street Oval to meet the club captain of the newly formed Fitzroy Football Club yesterday. "it was terrific to see the old team colours and see the old oval again." Newton said. "it brought back lovely memories of going to the footy there. Newton, a diehard Fitzroy fan, admited his interest in the AFL had waned since his beloved team merged with the Brisbane Bears in 1997. "it would be terrific to see them work their way back into the AFL." Newton said. "But I don't like the chances. The AFL is going in a different direction. It's a different game now to the one I remember." The football club will return to the old home ground for the first time in more than 40 years today when they take on Prahran for round 1 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
