JACK MORIARTY INDUCTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME FITZROY REDS HAVING ANOTHER TOP SEASON THE FITZROY SHOP TO OPEN FOR THE HERITAGE ROUND ON SUNDAY 1st AUGUST LIONS STALK COLLINGWOOD'S RECORD |
It was a special thrill last Monday night to see our nomination for the Club's greatest goal kicker, Jack Moriarty, be successful. Jack was one of five former players inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He joined Carl Ditterich, Denis Marshall, Dougie Hawkins and Phil Matson as the 2004 player inductees. The other admission was umpire Rowan Sawers. Jack's admission brings to seven the total FFC players who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Haydn Bunton, (Legend member), Jack Worrall, Kevin Murray and Bernie Quinlan, all inducted in 1996. Alan Ruthven in 1998 and Garry Wilson in 1999. David Parkin and Norm Smith have also been inducted as Coaches. David was our coach from 1986 to 1988 and Norm coached us from 1949 to 1951 before his great years at Melbourne. He also played for us in 1949 and 1950. The following players from other Clubs are also H of F members, but they did play some games with us. Albert Collier (FFC 1941-42, 12 games.) John Rantall (FFC 1980 6 games.) and Len Thompson (FFC 1980 13 games.) Our thanks to Bill Stephen who sent us the nomination forms three years ago. The FFC Board deliberated and we submitted Jack Moriarty and Chicken Smallhorn for player membership and the great Perce Mitchell as an administrator. One has got up so now for the other two plus some more of our stars who should be accepted by their peers as legends of the game. |

THE FITZROY SHOP TO OPEN FOR THE HERITAGE ROUND |
Work is proceeding well on the Shop and it will be open to the general public for the AFL Heritage round on Sunday the 1st August. It is situated at Shop 5 463 Main Street Mordialloc and will be a handy outlet for our Fitzroy jumpers, caps, books, Weg posters and other Fitzroy specific items. The pre 1975 FFC jumpers have proved to be a huge success and the shop will enable an easier way to buy them. All proceeds go to the support of the Fitzroy Reds and the Fitzroy Juniors and the other things that we do to support grass roots football. |

THE SHOP |

Our
special thanks to Club members Ted Hassett for making the honour
boards and Mark Edwards for his painting. All we are waiting
for now is the carpet, the erection of clothing racks, the completion
of the sign writing and the shop will come to life. We are sure that
you will be wrapped with the finished product. The budget is about two
million dollars less than the new AFL Hall of Fame project, but it will
be ours and a place for club members to gather each Sunday afternoon.
(It's amazing what you can do with five loaves and two fish.) There
will be a special opening for Club members on Sunday the 25th July but
a special notice will be sent out before hand.

THE
HERITAGE ROUND
The AFL Heritage Round is scheduled for the weekend of July 31st. The Lions will be in Sydney that weekend playing as the Bears against Sth Melbourne who will be playing as the Bloods no doubt. The Brisbane Lions have decided to wear the FFC strip when the Heritage round draws them to Melbourne and the Bears outfit when they go to the Gabba. So at least we should see a Fitzroy AFL game every so often with this policy unless they get drawn to play in Adelaide, Perth or Sydney like this year. |

The Club's 119th AGM was held last March at Haskins and seventy or so members gathered to accept our Annual Report for the 2003 Season and elect a new director to the Board. Tom Sargant is a very keen member and supporter of the Club and has been at most Fitzroy Reds games this year. Welcome aboard Tom and thanks for your support. We were also very honoured to have Clen Denning with us to launch a special 1944 Gorilla poster that WEG has done for us. Sponsorship cheques were presented to the President of the Reds, Benjy Lee and to the President of the Fitzroy Junior FC, Steve Turner. |

THE
FITZROY REDS
The Reds have had another great start to the season. At the mid season break, they are in the four with six wins and two losses and starting to look the goods. A win against Banyule at Heidelberg four weeks ago would have seen them sitting in outright second, but 7.20 does not win games. Good wins at Mt Eliza and Park Orchards have proved that Graham Burgen is starting to build another successful flag contender. The climb to the higher division has been aided in good pick ups in Phil Cianci and Tim Davis and our younger players have also lifted another cog. The team has had to cope with the loss of the Brunswick Street ground due to the Council deciding to returf the ground last January! The opening game was at Arden Street and we have played two home games at Punt Road. They look like playing ORMOND next Saturday at ARDEN Street, but if you are going to go to the match check the Fitzroy website first or ring the Club on 9580 6464 first. (After hours 9580 6624) Sincere apologies to Ted Knowles who spent one Saturday afternoon visiting Brunswick St, Punt Rd and Arden St on public transport trying to find them! Surprise they were at Ramsden St that day.

NEWS
FROM THE FITZROY JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB
Like the Reds, the hard working FJFC are also having a bugger of a year with the main oval waiting for the grass to grow. Club President Steve Turner and Secretary Joan Eddy and their hard working committee have two under tens, two under 11s, two under 13s and one under 14, under 15 and under 17 colts team to handle this year. Star Fitzroy Reds player Vinnie "the Flea" Cahill is coaching the under 17 colts team this year, which further strengthens the ties between these two FITZROY Clubs. The Reds under 19 team is in its second year now and going great guns. On top of their ladder with eight wins no losses and one or two of the better boys are playing in the Seniors! Most of the boys have come up from the Junior Club. We were able to answer a call for help for the trivia night by donating a box of FFC caps. The next big night for the Fitzroy Juniors is on Sunday evening the 20th June when David Parkin is going to be guest speaker for the FJFC Team Report night. If any member can spare a Sunday afternoon or morning to help with match day duties I am sure the Juniors would appreciate it. If you can help, give David Ryan a call on 0414 911 375. |

FITZROY
HIGH SCHOOL
| As you know doubt know, Fitzroy High is back in action after the conservatives shut it down, too. We have received a cry for help with football jumpers for the year 7 girls team and the boys. The new maroon, blue and gold jumpers were not yet ready so the old FFC was able to lend them a set of our precious VFL jumpers. No doubt the school will be a breeding ground for future Fitzroy stars, like the good old days. | |||||||||||

SUPPORT
THE FITZROY PAST PLAYERS
| On Saturday evening 26th June at the Hilton on the Park, the Past Players Association, led by Norm Brown are holding their 50th Annual Dinner Dance. It's a great opportunity to mix with the Fitzroy greats from the past and all FFC members are invited to be a part of the action. Clen Denning and Laurie Bickerton from the 1944 Premiership Team will be there to celebrate the 60th Anniversery of the 1944 flag together with our own Chairman and Board Members. It should be a gala Fitzroy night and worth the ticket price. A booking coupon follows. The FFC will be donating a replica 1944 jumper which should be worth a pretty penny with Clen, Laurie and Norm Johnstone's autographs on it! | |||||||||||
