Fitzroy Football Club: Great football, Great community, Great culture.

Fitzroy Football Club supports the Voice to Parliament

15-May-2023

To all members of our Fitzroy community,

As you know, later this year the Australian people will vote in a yes/no referendum on enshrining in the Constitution of Australia an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and Government.

As members of the Board and Directors of the Fitzroy Football Club, we are guided by our 2022–2025 Strategic Plan and our vision to be the strongest community club in Melbourne, providing great football, great community and great culture.

The goals our Strategic Plan outline the ways we can realise this vision, including enhancing an inclusive culture, and continuing to maintain and grow our reputation as a progressive and community engaged club of choice.

We believe that the Voice referendum presents a crucial moment in Australia’s history to recognise our First Nations’ peoples in the country’s constitution, and a willingness to listen to their concerns and opinions about matters that affect them. And that in taking this stance, we are being true to the strategic goals we are guided by.

We also believe in the right of our members and supporters to freely express their ideas in a respectful way, and want to ensure that our club provides a safe place for expressing differing opinions. We understand that not everyone will vote 'yes', and we fully respect that.

Notwithstanding, the Fitzroy Football Club wholeheartedly accepts the generous invitation of Indigenous representatives across the country to walk with them in a movement of the Australian people for a better future by supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the ‘yes’ position in the referendum.

David Leydon
President
and the Board of the Fitzroy Football Club
