Fitzroy takes inaugural Hipster Cup

12-May-2016

Friday night at Vic Park and the Fitzroy-ACU Womens team was not going to let an opportunity to play on hallowed turf pass them by without some heroics. In scenes reminiscent of a grand final, they celebrated winning the inaugural Hipster Cup against inner-city rivals the Brunswick Renegades.

Credit must go to the Renegades who came up with the excellent idea of naming the local derby and also producing a beautiful cup which will be hotly contested whenever the teams meet. The game was also a tight contest right up to the last siren.

Brunswick immediately promised to take the Hipster Cup back on the next outing, which is only seven weeks away.

Coach John Marshall speaking after the game said he was very proud of his team and particularly praised Molly Eastman, who has come up from the Fitzroy Junior Football Club and was best on ground. He also thanked the Renegades for a great game played in the right spirit.

Tess Cosgrave and Sarah Lynas had strong games and in her first game back after breaking her arm in the pre season, Captain Alexis Madden also helped steady things in the middle of the ground.
