Fitzroy Football Club: Great football, Great community, Great culture.

Massive day planned for Anzac Day

19-Apr-2016

Brunswick Street Oval is the place to be on Anzac Day for a full day of quality local footy when Fitzroy hosts Ajax in a special VAFA Premier B triple header.

Given the current form of the Pies and Bombers, and the all-but sellout at the MCG, forget the hefty price tag and spend the public holiday afternoon at Fitzroy's traditional home instead. Grab a spot on Hipster Hill, enjoy a burger or snag from Kerry's famous BBQ and cheer on the Roys.

Fitzroy and AJAX requested the move of their Saturday games to the Anzac Day Monday so as to avoid the Passover religious holiday for the Jewish community and to maximise attendance at Brunswick Street on the holiday Monday. It was a nice bit of a collaboration between the clubs, which tend to deliver fiery encounters on field. Both teams have started the season slowly, so the contest should be fierce.

The main game kicks off at 2pm, with the reserves playing at 11.40am and the thirds starting proceedings at 9.20am.

A wreath laying ceremony will be held just after 3pm during half time at the war memorial in Edinburgh Gardens.

Members and friends are also invited to a pre-game lunch on Anzac Day. If youd like to attend you will need to book online or call Anita Roper on 0477 304 142.

And make sure you get there early as (barring injury) life member and Reserves Coach, Sam Buckley and long-time team mate Richard Willingham, are expected to play their 150th games together in the Reserves game. More on that soon.

Players and members are expected to travel down to The Royal Derby after the game for a bit of post-game analysis.
