Fitzroy Football Club: Great football, Great community, Great culture.

Spoiled with riches, and nowhere to spend it!

If last week we asked you all to spare a thought for the coaches, now it’s the entire Ressies’ squad that deserves not only our sympathy, but our heartfelt thanks.

Already oversupplied with amazing talent, this week our opponents Mazenod failed to field enough players to give our Ressies a game.

“Obviously we feel for Mazenod,” said coach Gemma Minez. “With 13 of their players missing through injury, for us it was hugely disappointing not getting a game in.

“We were really looking forward to having 10-plus getting the chance to play their first game for the season.

“I’m very grateful for the fantastic culture the girls are building and their patience and understanding that debuts have had to be delayed.

“It’s also testament to our great culture and dedication that a large number of girls, led by captain Emma Bourke, trekked out to Glen Waverley to do a running session followed by a coffee and cheering on their team mates in the main game.”

And the Seniors certainly didn’t let them down! In another great game, the backline as a whole was amazingly impressive.

“Pleasingly, the midfield really started clicking at the end of the game,” senior coach Nathan Jumeau said. “And the forwards showed impressive patches of play throughout the game.”

Best on ground honours went to experienced campaigner Gina Bennett, joined by up-and-comers Clodagh Taylor and Esther Boles who played her first game for the Roys.

The final score pretty much says it all, with the Roys triumphing with a resounding 59 to 8.

Ressies captain Emma Bourke (as goal umpire) and injured team mate Elaine Murphy (statistician) really had their work cut out for them with the Senior Roys posting a giant score and dominating the play all game.

Next week may prove a tougher challenge as we face Beaumaris back at BSO.

But we reckon you’ll have the heart and the talent to get the job done. Go Roygirls!
