Fitzroy Football Club: Great football, Great community, Great culture.

Vale Robert Walls

15-May-2025

Club president David Leydon reflects on the career and passing of AFL great and former Fitzroy player and coach Robert Walls.

After a stellar career at Carlton, Robert came to Fitzroy in 1978.

He played a big part in our ’78 Night Premiership win which laid the ground work for a team that went on to make five finals series between 1979 and 1986.

After retiring as a player, Robert became Fitzroy coach in 1981 and had immediate success taking the team to the ‘81, ‘83 and ’84 finals series.

He was a very popular coach amongst the Roys players after having spent time playing alongside them. He put a strong emphasis on fitness and a tough and hard-at -the-ball mentality, and players and supporters loved it.

He was responsible for revolutionising many aspects of the game most notably the ‘kick in huddle’ in the early ‘80s which confused opposition teams and soon became a staple of the game.

After leaving the Fitzroy coaching role, Robert went back to Carlton and coached them to a premiership, and also had later stints at Richmond and Brisbane.

He always loved the people of Fitzroy and was always prepared to come back to the club for social functions and milestone moments.

Robert was also very approachable and happy to have a chat with supporters. A great bloke, a great football mind, and a great legacy for the game.

Condolences to Robert’s family and friends from the Fitzroy Football Club.

Robert Walls – legend.
