Wishing a happy Mother's Day to all our Fitzroy mums and wonderful women in the Fitzroy community who make us a family.
For all you do, the unseen work, the unconditional love, the time and energy and support. We see you. We thank you. You are an integral part of us.
We hope all our mums have a great day on Sunday despite the current restrictions in place that might make it a little harder this year. We look forward to celebrating you all when we can get back to BSO.
Go Roys!
President Joan Eddy on the airwaves
Fitzroy President Joan Eddy called into ABC Melbourne Afternoons to talk about the thriving Fitzroy Football Club community and – COVID-19 notwithstanding – still playing on our old home ground at Brunswick Street Oval, 137 years after Australian Rules football was first played on the famous old ground.
Lion Cubs Meet the Players Morning 1994. 20 month old Sean Leydon with Paul Roos.
By David Leydon
A long forgotten, small, but much-loved part of the old Fitzroy Football Club was a membership group called 'The Lion Cubs' that started in 1977 for Under 15 supporters .
For a membership fee of $5.00, young supporters could join the Lion Cubs and get a range of benefits throughout the season including:
FFC Junior season ticket which admitted members to all 22 games for the season
Free gifts at every home game
Meet the players Sunday mornings at the Junction Oval home ground
At every home game two footballs autographed by the whole team were given away to lucky winners
At the end of the season there was usually a family carnival day at the Bacchus Marsh Lion Safari Park
Members also got a Birthday card signed by their favourite players.
The best part of being a Lion Cub was always the 'meet the players' mornings that were held twice a year at the Junction Oval.
The players had brief recovery sessions on Sundays and would then come out and spend time kicking the footy with fans and posing for hundreds of photos.
Young supporters always received a speech from the Coach and the Captain at these mornings.
We all hung off every word of coaches Graham Campbell, Bill Stephen and then Robert Walls. Our magnificent Captain Ron Alexander was always inspiring and made all of us proud to be Fitzroy fans.
It was great fun to get out on the oval for a kick with the likes of Garry Wilson, Harvey Merrigan, Laurie Serafini, Micky Conlan and David McMahon.
After 1979, I was too old to be a member, but my younger sister Kelly remained a member into the early ‘80s.
The original certificate from 1977
The group ran through to the 1990s and the day after my son, Sean, was born in 1992, I went to the club and signed him up as a
Lion Cub member.
I know there’s a number of supporters who frequent Brunswick Street Oval today who were part of the original Lion Cubs crew back in ’77.
Back in those days, there was nothing better than watching the Roys, wearing and loving the colours, and singing the club song. Nothing has changed in 2020, and it never will.
The 1977 Birthday card signed by Ron Alexander, Harvey Merrigan,
Norm Dare, Graeme Allan and Gary Chapman.

As tax time approaches, consider a tax deductible donation to support the Roys
The Fitzroy Football Club is a strong, vibrant community club with a proud history that we are passionate about preserving and strengthening as we pursue success on and off the field.
As tax time gets closer, our fully tax deductible fundraising channel through the Australian Sports Foundation is up an running if you'd like to make a donation to the club.
Our club is doing what we can to manage during these times and we're playing our role to stop the spread of the coronavirus and keep our community safe. We’re a strong and resilient club. We're going to get through this.
But we also need as much help as possible to keep thriving and come out the other side of this in a position that allows us to continue at our best.
We know it’s a hard ask, but for anyone who is in a position to, we have the Fitzroy Forever Operations Fund up and running for any donation, big or small.
In an exciting partnership announced at the end of 2019, we have connected with the Australian Sports Foundation, which allows all donations to the Fitzroy Forever Operations Fund to be fully tax deductible.
Any donation will help the famous Fitzroy Football Club come through this crisis and allow us to continue bringing our community together through football.
We are so appreciative of any support and can’t wait to be back at the football again with you all.
Thank you for your support and stay strong Roys family.
